How Yoga Can Heal Trauma Within Your Body

March is a powerful month according to the stars.

It kicks off with a full moon in Virgo on March 7, asking us to really hone in on our own health and healing and to follow our unique inner wisdom to do so.

That same day we have Saturn moving out of Aquarius and into Pisces after two and a half years! This will have a much different feel. Saturn in Pisces will now ask us to find a deeper meaning to our lives and provide an opportunity to find clarity around our deepest dreams and desires. This will be a continuous theme for the next 2 - 3 years.

But what may be really standing out for us right now, and has been building over the last month or so, is Jupiter conjunct Chiron on March 12. Individually and collectively we’ve all been feeling the building of this transit. Maybe over the last few months, you’ve felt a little extra vulnerable and exposed.

Chiron is known in astrology as the wounded healer. Wherever Chiron is placed within your birth chart has been an area of your life that feels a little more tender and easily activated. What we’ve been feeling over the course of the last month is an activation of old wounds that haven’t been processed through yet.

There’s good news to this story though. With Jupiter conjunct Chiron this will allow light to illuminate the bigger picture around these unique wounds, providing clarity on how to move forward, how to grow and evolve from it all.

The Wounded Healer… and the Guru

With Chiron acting as a major player in the month of March, let’s dive a little deeper into how yoga can help you transform and process your wounds, in a gentle and safe way.

As mentioned earlier, Chiron is a symbol of our deeper wounds and trauma, in this life and others. It’s our sensitive points, the things and areas in our lives that feel raw, where we sometimes feel the need to defend and protect ourselves.

But it’s also our greatest gift in this life.

If you look at your birth chart, notice which house Chiron falls in, and under what sign. The house will tell you the area of life and the sign will tell you the lens or filter of that wound… and it also sheds light on how you can transform this wound to become your greatest teacher.

Chiron teaches us that our wounds, our trauma, our softest and most tender points, can lead us to our most powerful growth and transformation.

Yoga to Heal Your Deepest Wounds

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, a trauma-focused thought leader and expert in his field, has dedicated his career to defining and understanding trauma and how to process it for growth and transformation.

A conclusion he has reached is that trauma is not necessarily what we - the mainstream media - have defined it as. Trauma does not need to be a long-standing wound resulting from years of ignoring it. Trauma can be small or big. What one person finds traumatic does not necessarily result in trauma to another.

Trauma is unique to the individual and how they have perceived a situation or circumstance.

“Trauma is actually the residue from the past as it settles into your body. It’s located inside your own skin.” - Bessel van der Kolk

This is where yoga enters the discussion.

The foundation of yoga is based on allowing, developing, and strengthening the flow of energy throughout your entire being. Yoga asks you to bring every little ounce of your attention and awareness to your body, to your breath, and intentionally listen to the cues your body is communicating.

The more you practice tapping into your physical being, the more space you allow your mental, emotional, and spiritual being to heal and integrate with the physical. As you practice yoga, the more you become friends with your body, creating a safe space to explore and tune in.

When someone is experiencing a fight or flight response as a result of trauma it is impossible to address or process said trauma. The nervous system is too activated and the brain’s only concern is survival. Yoga and breathwork, allow the space to calm the nervous system and bring the hemispheres of the brain to come back into harmony, communicating with each other. Once this occurs, it becomes possible to bring awareness to the parts of us that need healing and the centeredness to allow that processing to occur.

Take the Time to Tune In

During this transit, take advantage of this time by allowing yourself the space and time to tune into your body. While Jupiter conjunct Chiron will bring forth those tender wounds, it will also provide a lighthouse to show us the way toward healing.

Develop a yoga practice that focuses on physical asanas and breathwork and meditation. Move as slowly or intuitively as you need to with an emphasis on paying attention to every cue, every sensation, and every emotion. Rather than dwelling in those spaces though, simply notice it all.

Be the observer of your own being.

Find Community

If the thought of developing your own practice during this tender time seems like too much, explore the various classes offered through Sol Luna Yoga and find a safe space within community as well.

There will be times in your healing journey when being alone and in solitude may feel more fitting. And other times when community and outside support is essential in your healing. Pay attention to those cues as well. Neither is right, wrong, better, or worse.

It’s not about the judgment, it’s just about taking the time to listen to what your soul is asking for… and listening.
