Nourish Your Mind, Body, and Soul This Virgo Season with These 6 Yoga Asanas

With the end of August comes the beginning of Virgo season – and the close of Leo season. Virgo is an earth sign, known for its meticulous, organized, yet nurturing, nature. While Leo is a fire sign, known for its determination, leadership, and action.

Can you feel the shift as the summer winds down? From a fiery Leo season to a more gentle and earthy Virgo season?

Is it any surprise that the new school year begins in the sign of working hard, perfectionism, and organization?

You’ll likely begin feeling this subtle shift in different ways. And you may naturally start to alter your routine or activities because of it.

This Virgo season, lean into the changes in season and energy and nourish yourself a little extra during this time. Keep reading to find out how you can do just that, on and off your mat.

Gently Guided by Virgo

Virgo is a sign known for its discipline – sometimes rigidity – and eye for detail. Virgo oftentimes gets called a perfectionist because of this attention to detail and need for things to be a certain way. At the same time, Virgo is also known for being a nurturer and caregiver to others. Because it is an earth sign, Virgo offers a calm peacefulness to whomever they’re around.

And, as Virgo is a mutable sign, this means Virgo is great at creating a smooth transition from one season to the next – both literally and figuratively. Which is perfect for this same transition we are making from summer into fall.

Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury, the planet of communication. Mercury rules over a person's intelligence, mentality, analytical skills, learning, grasping power, the central nervous system, and body language. So Virgo is also skilled at not only communication, but also in their ability to read others. And they love to learn!

Virgo also rules over the 6th house in astrology, the house of daily routines, service to others, health, duty, and responsibility. Virgo here provides you with the discipline and organization needed to carry out your routines and responsibilities, while also offering the guidance and nurturing needed with matters of health and service to others.

Nurture Virgo, Off Your Mat

Now that we have a better grasp on what Virgo loves and how it thrives, you can begin integrating activities and routines that will nourish the Virgo in you and during this time.

Organize and Declutter Your Space

Virgo loves organization. And even better for you, Virgo just likes their unique type of organization, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. So organization can look however you want it to look! Take some time to evaluate and assess your possessions, and the things that are taking up space in your life – physically, mentally, emotionally. Where can you let go? What can you release or remove? Allow yourself more space to expand and breathe and move and create.

Nourish Your Body

Virgo values health. During Virgo season, you’ll feel a nudge toward the activities and daily choices that will beneficially impact your health. You may feel called to start a new exercise routine, to make healthier food choices, start to see a therapist or begin a new meditation or yoga practice. Whatever you’re being nudged to do, follow that inner guidance from nurturing Virgo.

Feed Your Mind

With Virgo being ruled by Mercury you may also notice an increased inclination toward learning, whether that be a new skill or language, getting ready to go back to school or even thinking about returning. Or, perhaps your mental activity increases and you suddenly reach solutions you’ve been searching for. With increased mental activity, you may also notice an increase in anxiety. Virgo encourages you to practice mindfulness in some way to keep your mind healthy just as much as your physical body.

Get Involved in Community

The nurturing and service-driven nature of Virgo may inspire you to also get more involved in community this season. You could donate to a local charity, volunteer at a local organization, or simply be there for a friend in need. There is no right way to give back or be involved in community, but there’s lots of opportunities!

Nurture Virgo, On Your Mat

Naturally, with Virgo’s love and appreciation for moving the body and keeping it healthy, yoga is a must during this season – but who are we kidding, it’s a must every season!

Virgo rules over the abdomen, digestive system, and spleen within the body. So poses that incorporate abdominal work as well as twisting through the spine and abdomen will really nourish that Virgo energy within you.

Here are a few yoga asanas you can bring to your yoga mat during this season. Remembering to always listen to your unique bodily cues and maybe even focusing a little more on the communication between you and your body… just how Virgo likes it.

Revolved Lunge

Just as it sounds, step your right foot into a lunge, bringing your hands down to the mat, framing each side of your right foot. You can keep your back knee lifted or resting on the mat. Inhale, press into your left palm and lift your right hand to the sky. Twisting your torso to the right as you do. Hold here for a few breaths before switching sides.

Seated Twist

Begin in a seated position with your legs stretched out in front of you. Draw your right knee in toward your chest and cross that right foot over your left leg. Using your left hand to hold your right knee to your chest, inhale your right arm up overhead. As you exhale, twist to your right and place your right hand behind your hips on the floor. Breathe deeply here, twisting a little more with each exhale. Switch sides when you’re ready.

Revolved Pyramid

Begin with your right foot is forward. Your left foot in behind you but flat on the mat with toes angled toward the corner of your mat and slightly toward the left (not directly in line with your right foot). Inhale and lift through your chest. Exhale and bend at your hips, keeping your back flat. Bring your left hand down to the inside of your right foot (on the mat or a block) and rotate your torso to the right. Hold here and breathe. Repeat on the other side.

Plow Pose

Begin laying your back on your mat. Pressing your palms into the mat, engage your core and lift your hips and legs up off the mat, legs extending and reaching toward your shoulders and over your head until your toes rest on the floor above your head. Your can leave your hands alongside you or place them at the small of your back for added support. You can also bend your knees and bring them toward your forehead rather than extending your legs out completely overhead.

Wheel Pose

Lay on your back with your feet planted on the mat. Bring your hands toward you, palms facing the ceiling, bringing them down to rest on the mat beside your ears – fingertips are facing your shoulders, elbows are tucked in toward your face and ears. Engage your core and glute muscles as you push into your feet, lifting your hips. At the same time, press into your hands and lift your back from the mat. Your gaze turns down and behind you as you come up into wheel pose. Hold here for a few breaths.

Supine Twist

Perhaps the best for last – am I wrong?! Begin laying on your back and extend your arms out into a T position. Inhale your knees into your chest. As you exhale, bring your knees down to the right side to rest on the floor. Relax your shoulders so they both press into the mat. Gently turn your head toward your left shoulder. Hold here and breathe. Take as long as you’d like before switching to the other side.
